On today’s show, my toilet keeps running. What do you do?
I’m John Eccles. Richard Saad. We are talking today about my toilet keeps running. How do we repair that toilet and toilet repair, right? That’s right. That’s what we’re talking about. So what do you do if your toilet starts running? Go catch it. That’s a crappy joke. Literally. Oh, okay. Well now that we’re on the toilet subject here, so let’s tell people what, what is it that makes a toilet run? Why would it be running? What are the parts that are going out the side, right legs besides its legs had to, right. What else is there that are going to, that you’re gonna make and, and what are the signs of it, right? Yeah. Yeah. These are really important question. It is one of our number one, you know, kind of call volume kind of calls. You know a lot of people. Yeah, that’s right. So why and what is gonna make a toilet run?
Let me tell you. Tell me. Um, one would be usage, right? Right. So the more you use a commode, obviously the more things are going to wear down. Just normal wear and tear. Uh, we normally see commercial establishments go through their stuff a little bit more because obviously there’s more people going in and out. Just like at your home, you’ve probably maybe done a repair on one bathroom that you and all the guests normally use versus a bathroom that no one ever uses. Obviously the toilet’s going to get a repair probably before the other one sang is the more I use the toilet, the more apt that is to break. It is true that if you use it, you lose it.
The term that’s true you guys, the more you use, the more apt it is to fail more quicker. Yeah. So, and another thing that it can be is we’ve got a brace of water and Houston and we’re using a new product called chloramines and everybody thinks we’re still on a chlorine system. That’s the disinfectant process that they’re putting in our water to keep us safe. Right. Which is basically a poison. Uh, they’ve, they’ve changed this, I don’t know, I think about 10 years ago, something like that. And now we’re using chloramines chloramines abrasive. It has ammonia in it. So it is eating rubber more than ever at this point. So our toilets are mostly made of of the inner guts, let’s call it a, are mostly made of plastic and rubber. Yeah. Well the rubbers being eaten. Yeah. Right. Absolutely. So when you’re walking by a bathroom, or especially if it’s in the master bathroom and you hearing, you’re hearing a hissing sound, that means water’s leaking, leaking through that fill valve, um, typically or the flappers letting it get through there and it’s going into the bowl, which is then turning on the fill valve.
Right? Right. So what do you do? There’s a few things that you can do yourself before you call somebody like us, right? Absolutely. Make sure if you hear it hissing, you know there’s something wrong, right. What would be the next step that’s going to be the fill valve. That’s the part that’s delivering the water into your bowl and into your tank. Right? Right. Take your lid off the toilet. You can visibly see all of those parts and they’re called guts, so you can visibly see those. So make sure that the chain is not underneath your, it’s called, the technical term is actuator. People call it a flapper. That’s the part that seats on the toilet and that goes up and down to allow the water to flow into the toilet. Right? Right. I think it goes in the bowl. That’s right. That delivers the water into the tank.
So make sure that nothing has stuck underneath that flapper. Sure. And that is closing properly and seated properly, uh, to where water can’t get through. Yes. Now if that’s the case, then it could be the fill valve that’s not working properly. And there’s a lot of things that go into to place that could create an issue. And one is dirty water. You know, there’s particulates running through our water all the time and it’s got rubber pieces. So if something came from the main water supply got in there and it’s lifted it up, you can’t see that because it’s underneath some plastic pieces. Right. But all in all, if you want to try to replace those parts are typically the only two that go out and saying that those parts of very drastically it from a one piece toilet to a two piece toilet, you can go get a part that’s $10 all the way up to $400 depending on what toilet that you have.
Is it a two piece toilet or one piece toilet? And it’s typically these one piece toilets, uh, that have these more expensive fill valves, uh, in there that can get up to that $400 level. Typically, your two piece toilets don’t have that. So if you guys want to try this at home, um, there’s some great videos on youtube that show you how to unscrew and screw back in, right? Right. So if you want to, to try it, then if it fails or doesn’t fail, you succeed. Whatever it is, you need help. We’re here, right? So, I mean, there’s a lot of things that I have tried and failed and I have to call some money out. Hey, can you come, uh, get me out of this please? So we all do it. But what’s that sign that we’re running right now on our company sign failures.
The mother of success. That’s right. If you don’t try, you don’t fail. Right. But that is our profession and we still fail every now and then. So if you don’t want to try it, call us and we can do it. Now, another thing that if you’re not hearing anything, um, you can put dye in the tank. I meant to go back. I’m going to go back a little bit and tell you we can put dye in the tank. You can, yeah. Koolaid. So if you made whatever she have a high water bill, if you have a high water bill that that can be a notice of, of a tool that running or something going on, you know, rather than having a leak in the house. Sometimes your tool, it’s running and you won’t even know it. Right? And you can do it as simple as putting what?
Food coloring, right? Food, coloring up the food. Coloring Koolaid. Yeah, Koolaid. Right. That’s a little Gatorade. If you see that water transferred down from, obviously you’re putting the coloring into the tank. If you see the transferred down into the bowl, then you know that there’s a leak somewhere. Something’s not selling the way it should be or that there’s an issue. Now at toilet running, I can verify Billy tell you that it can add another hundred dollars or better to your water bill a month. Oh yeah. So if you see a big jump in your water bill, your first place to go to is your toilets and try it. You start there and then look elsewhere. But at toilet can easily add $100 a month. So you think we’re expensive but the toilet run for a month and that will get expensive. Oh yeah, absolutely. It’s just, and it’s wasteful, right?
It’s not very conservative when it comes to conserving water. It’s wasting water and waste and water. Yeah, it is drinkable water. Yeah, it is the water that eventually you’re going to drink it. That’s exactly right. So any questions around that? John and I are here for you. So let’s talk about the toilet repair. We kinda got into that a little bit. Right. So how would we repair that toilet and what would we do? So they make complete rebuild kits all the way up to single components. Typically what we like to do is the age of those components tend to be the same. Yeah. So we tend to like to replace, even though the component is still good, it’s cheap enough to go ahead and put that new part in there and it’s easy enough to put the new part in there. So when we go do a complete toilet, that’s called a complete toilet rebuild.
And that’s typically what we will do. But you have an option to actually just replace one component at a time. Yep. Um, and we do a lot of that as well. It’s whatever fits your needs, whatever you want to do. Uh, and again, as a homeowner, you can do a full replacement yourself or you can replace that one component. Yeah. Right. Absolutely. That’s where if you get in trouble, we’re only a phone call away. That’s exactly right. I’ve had a couple of those. Yes. It happens after, you know, it seems simple enough. And like you said, you know, people, um, especially cause it’s visible, right? They want to try to do it themselves and uh, depending on your skill level, right? If you’re a mechanical inclined person, you could probably tackle it pretty easily. If you’re not, then if you try it and you mess up, it’s okay.
Like Richard saying as part of life or if you just feel like you don’t want to tackle it at all, deal with it, give us a call, we’ll help you out. And if it gets messed up, there is a valve that is coming out of the wall. Turn that off so your toilet does not keep running. Right. And also, if you’re going to change these components, go ahead and turn the water off as well. You know, don’t keep it running. We should go, you know, elementary school there because people might not know they need to turn the water off. Right. And we’ve been doing it so long we forget to tell people as part of that youtube video as part of the youtube video. That’s exactly right. Any questions that you guys may have. Give us a call. We are here to come fix your toilet. Do that toilet repair. Your toilet keeps running. Call us. Thank you guys. Thank you so much.
