Before the 1940’s, Missourian Frank Bruess read about a country estate in Hillshire, England. He liked the name so much that when he built a housing community in the suburbs of a growing Houston, he called Hilshire Village (with only one “L”). Formed in the early 1950’s, Hilshire Village today measures out to .3 square miles and is home to roughly 800 residents.

As part of the failed 1954 effort to form a Spring Branch municipality, along with several of the communities now collectively known as the Memorial Villages, Hilshire Village was officially incorporated in April of 1955 and adopted a mayor-council form of government.

The city of Houston did not annex the territory of Hilshire Village within its city limits, but it did add the surrounding unincorporated areas.

During the 1990’s, the smallest of the Memorial Villages, Hilshire Village, reached a population of 665 residents, many of whom decided to demolish their older style homes and replace them with more elaborate, modern structures.
