Spring Branch is a mostly commercial district, located in west-northwest Harris County, and lies almost entirely within the city limits of Houston. The Spring Branch Management District currently holds jurisdiction over the neighborhood.

The area known as Spring Branch began its existence as a community of farmers that emigrated from Germany in the 1830’s, seeking refuge from the oppressive conditions of the time. The regions earliest settler was Karl Kolbe, who arrived from Germany in 1830. While most of the immigrants in the area ran dairy farms and sawmills, others were involved in the foundation of the Church of St. Peter in 1848.

In 1865, the minister of St. Peter’s Church began teaching classes at the church for local children. As the area grew, the need for trained faculty; as well as the desire for a non-secular education system, led to the formation of the first schoolhouse in Spring Branch. This site now is home to the Spring Branch Elementary School.

As Spring Branch evolved from a farming community into more of a residential and commercial area in the 1940’s and 1950’s, there was an interest among the locals to avoid being absorbed into the city of Houston. The Memorial Villages was a resulting group of six individual communities that did incorporate. While this effort managed to stave off the inevitable for a while, the city of Houston finally annexed the remaining unincorporated areas of Spring Branch in 1957.

After the annexation, Spring Branch tried to maintain its “small-town” aesthetic. As the 1960’s were ending, the area became known for having high-end subdivisions immediately adjacent to low-income apartment complexes. While never considered a hotbed of criminal activity, several areas of Spring Branch were known as “places to avoid” throughout the 1970’s and early 1980’s.

Today, Spring Branch is the midst of a resurgence with a focus on redevelopment. As the metropolitan Houston area expands, many formerly outlying communities are seeing an upturn in population and commerce. Many Hispanic and Korean owned businesses now cater to the diverse ethnic clientele of the area, especially now that Spring Branch enjoys proximity to the downtown Houston area, as well as the Energy Corridor business district.
