The center of Spring, Texas is located at the intersection of Spring-Cypress and Hardy roads, and encompasses a roughly two-kilometer square area around it. It is recognized as a census-designated place, which is an unincorporated area with a significant concentration of people. As of the 2010 census, approximately fifty-five thousand people lived in Spring.

Initially inhabited by the Orcoquiza Native American tribe, the area now known as Spring was placed in the municipality of Harrisburg in 1836. By 1840, Spring Creek had a trading post and a population of 153. As German immigrants began to arrive in the area, several farming communities were established supplying mainly sugar cane and cotton.

The International and Great Northern Railroad opened through Spring in 1871, creating a growth spurt in the town. By 1884, Spring was home to a pair of sawmills, two cotton gins, three churches, several schools and a post office. In 1912, the Spring State Bank opened, and during a population decline in the 1930’s, the bank was robbed several times, purportedly once by the infamous Bonnie and Clyde. Spring State Bank merged with Tomball Bank in 1935.

By 1950, Spring, TX had only 700 residents, and it wasn’t until the expansion of the Houston suburbs during the oil boom of the 1980’s that the area began to bounce back. Many of the older homes in what is now known as Old Town Spring were renovated and turned into shops. By 1984, the area blossomed to fifteen-thousand residents.

For twenty-five years, the Goodyear blimp America was housed in Spring, and takeoffs and landings would cause motorists driving on I-45 to pull over and watch. That ended in 1992 when America was moved to Akron, Ohio. The site is now host to a Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
