Season 3, Episode 1
The Post-Holiday Plumbing Check-Up: How to Get Your Plumbing Back to Normal in the New Year!
JOHN: (00:00)
John, what happened? You look like you fought a garbage dispos…oh, wait, that’s Richard’s line.
Come on, it’s four minutes. I need you to lock in for four minutes.
You ready?
RICHARD:
Yep.
JOHN:
I like it. Let’s go.
RICHARD: (00:16)
John, what happened? Look like you went 12 rounds with the disposal…
JOHN: (00:23)
And lost? I did. I absolutely did. And you know why? Because some fool decided that the Christmas ham grease in the kitchen drain will just probably melt away eventually.
RICHARD:(00:35)
Was that somebody…you?
JOHN: (00:37)
Look, Richard. It’s the holidays. Mistakes were made. We’ve all sinned and that’s all I’m gonna say.
RICHARD:(00:43)
On today’s show. It’s all about the post-holiday plumbing check, otherwise known as, look what your relatives did to your plumbing.
JOHN: (00:52)
That’s funny as hell.
RICHARD: (00:53)
That is good.
RICHARD:(01:27)
Welcome back everyone to the new season of the Potty Mouth Guys. I’m Richard Saad.
JOHN: (01:32)
And I’m John Eckles. Just happy to be here.
RICHARD:(01:35)
Alright, let’s get into why your plumbing deserves a checkup after the holidays, John. Extra guest, big meals, lots of dishes, big boys on the toilet, twice as many showers, more laundry. It all adds up.
JOHN: (01:49)
Yeah. And your plumbing systems probably worked harder than you did hosting your family, and that’s saying something because you cooked, cleaned and plastered on a stress-induced fake smile all while pretending to enjoy your brother-in-law’s company.
RICHARD:(02:02)
You know what? Drains clog. Water heaters get cranky, disposals burn out, but the holiday season can really take a toll on your home. So today we’re breaking down how to get everything back on track.
JOHN: (02:16)
Think of this as like some New Year’s resolutions for your pipes, except these are ones you’re actually gonna have to follow through on
RICHARD:(02:24)
The holidays push every part of the plumbing system to its limit. It’s not just the extra dishes, the added grease down the kitchen drain, the extra long showers your father enjoys or the added laundry.
JOHN: (02:36)
Exactly. It’s always the guests who aren’t following common sense Plumbing rules like the three P rule.
RICHARD:(02:42)
I’m halfway afraid to ask. Can you remind me what that three P rule is? Yeah.
JOHN: (02:47)
You flush pee, poop, and (toilet) paper. That’s it. No disposable wipes, no hygiene products, no paper towels, no band-aid, no cotton balls or Q-tips. No dental floss, no cat litter, and definitely no stuffed animals.
RICHARD:(03:02)
That’s absolutely perfect. It should be the 11th commandment. And God forbid we even have a mild cold snap while you’re still hosting out of town friends and relatives. The increased demand on your plumbing system, coupled with the onset of a cold front, puts additional stress on pipes, fittings, and water heaters.
JOHN: (03:22)
Yeah, look, it’s not your fault. It’s always your never follows the rules, redheaded step cousin Greg, who still, at 44 years old, tries to flush wads of toilet paper the size of the shape of a football. He actually managed to flush his wallet a couple years ago.
Anyway, it’s pretty safe to say that a quick post New Year’s Day plumbing check is a good idea to help catch any hidden problems early.
RICHARD:(03:44)
Doesn’t he still live with your mom?
JOHN: (03:47)
Stop.
RICHARD:(03:48)
I mean, it’s usually the guest who thinks just a little grease won’t hurt the sink, not the host. But I’ll try not to hold John’s ham grease travesty against him, but know this. That’s how garbage disposals die, folks.
JOHN: (04:02)
Yeah, but look at the bright side. If you pour enough bacon grease down the drain to block your uh, drain line, congratulations. Not only did you have a clogged kitchen sink, you’ve also created a homemade sewage pipe candle.
RICHARD:(04:15)
I’m not gonna be burning that one anytime soon.
Typically, a quick walkthrough will catch most new problems before they have a chance to grow into some expensive catastrophe.
JOHN: (04:25)
Yeah. Running faucets and monitoring for any drips once they’re shut off. By monitoring, I don’t mean that you need to sit and stare at it till it drips. You just drop a bowl under the faucet and check it periodically during the day. Make sure that your toilets aren’t flushing slowly or constantly running to fill the tank due to a leak check for active leaks and signs of water damage by opening cabinets and looking under the sinks.
RICHARD:(04:47)
Don’t forget that your choice of drain cleaning methods matters. For the love of Houston, S-stop using chemical drain cleaners. They’re corrosive and will eat straight through your pipes while filling the surrounding air with caustic byproducts of their chemical reactions.
JOHN: (05:03)
Yeah, that’s all very true. But don’t forget that these chemical drain cleaners aren’t something you would never want to get on your skin accidentally or worse in your eyes or mouth. Right? Chemical burns are nasty thing to deal with, and so is the lung damage caused by breathing in those toxic, toxic fumes.
RICHARD:(05:18)
It’s just all bad stuff. Sulfuric acid, lye – you know, the mafia’s favorite “problem dissolver”, muratic acid, bleach, all combining together to create a reaction strong enough to eat through whatever or whoever the hell is clogging your toilet.
JOHN: (05:34)
Nick’s Plumbing has been fully endorsing the use of enzyme based drain cleaners for almost a decade. Now, whether they’re not for use in an already clogged drain, they are an excellent preventative maintenance product. Pour a cup or two into an accessible drain and let it go to work. The enzymes blend in with the blockage and eat their way through them from the inside out.
RICHARD:(05:54)
Don’t forget to show your garbage disposal a little love as well. Pour some of that enzyme base cleaner down that kitchen sink, drain, and let all those natural enzymes evict everything that’s been lying in your pipes and are not paying rent. Make sure it’s operating properly. Listen for any unusual metal hitting metal sounds and check around the base of the disposal for any leaks.
JOHN: (06:18)
Water heaters definitely work harder during the holiday season, and this is where sediment buildup in your tank becomes a key issue because of what some call mineral rich, but we refer to it as hard water. In Houston. Our hard water can be the enemy of any appliance that use it. Washing machines, dishwashers, and particularly water heaters, can expect a much shorter than normal lifespan due to this mineralized menace.
RICHARD:(06:41)
Water heaters tend to get the worst of it when it comes to mineral buildup. Dishwashers and washing machine drain the water used in the wash cycles, the mineral deposits that settle at the bottom of your water heater tank coagulate, taking up more and more space on that tank as time goes on.
JOHN: (06:57)
You know, simply flushing the tank, checking the temper temperature and pressure relief valve, and even verifying the thermostat settings will help restore performance. Then building a simple year-round maintenance routine help prevent most unexpected emergencies. The point is, treat your plumbing right and that includes your water dependent appliances and they won’t betray you when you least expect it.
RICHARD:(07:19)
If your plumbing survive the holidays without causing you a single problem, you need to give it the respect it deserves. Doing a quick walkthrough, checking for leaks on any exposed pipes, getting started with performing regular safe drain cleaning and paying a little attention to your water heater will go a long way.
JOHN: (07:36)
Yeah, treat your plumbing like you treat your plants. Make sure there’s plenty of water, and once in a while, talk to your plumbing. Tell it what a great job it’s doing. I can’t promise it’ll help, but it certainly is not gonna hurt.
RICHARD:(07:47)
Speaking of witch, if something doesn’t look or feel right, we’re here to help before it turns into a massive issue.
