Plumbing emergencies wait for no one. Clogged toilets and shower drains, leaking sewer pipes and gas lines don’t care if you’re late for work or have a family of four that need hot showers. When the worst happens, you need an experienced, reliable plumbing company in Sugar Land, call Nick’s Plumbing Service.

The city of Sugar Land has a rich history. Even before it was incorporated as a city in 1959, Sugar Land was the original site of the Imperial Sugar Company. In 1853 the land was purchased from a private owner; Samuel Williams, by former gold prospectors Ben Terry and William Kyle. Sugar cane had been imported from Cuba early in the 1800’s, and by the middle of the century, a mule-powered mill was constructed to make molasses.

By 1860, the property the mill occupied was worth $250,000 (or seven million dollars today, adjusting for inflation) and subsequently passed through many owners until 1907, when the land was purchased by I.H. Kempner and W.T. Eldridge. The pair expanded the existing sugar mill on the plantation, and an adjoining 12,000-acre plantation was added to the property. As part of the purchase agreement, W.T. Eldridge relocated to the site to assist with the building of the company-owned town of Sugar Land.

From 1907 until 1959, Sugar Land was a self-contained company-owned town, with its own schools, hospital, and businesses provided by Imperial Sugar for its resident employees. A housing boom within Sugar Land took place in the 1950’s, leading to the creation of Venetian Estates, a waterfront community along Oyster Creek.

By the mid-1950’s, interest had grown within the Sugar Land community in establishing a formal government. In 1959, Sugar Land became a general law city with a municipal government. Beginning in the early 1960’s, the growth of Sugar Land was exponential over the next three decades. Aided by the construction of U.S. Highway 59, Sugar Land’s once expansive farmlands were replaced by golf courses, shopping centers, and planned communities.

In 2003, Sugar Land became known as a ‘principal city’ in the Houston metropolitan area, replacing Galveston in the title of Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land Metropolitan Area.
